The establishment was marked in agreements signed on August 24th by Vietnamese Minister of Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh and Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova.

The signing of the agreements is expected to help Vietnam increase cooperation with ASEAN member countries, Asian countries, and both developed and developing countries through the network of UNESCO, thus raising the position of Vietnam’s sciences in the region and in the world, making contributions to the development of regional and international basic sciences.

The centres aims to develop and support basic science for regional countries and looking towards countries in the Asia - Pacific and Africa, while contributing to UNESCO programs through scientific research, educational and training activities, as well as other activities at national and regional levels.

They will also participate in international research projects with the cooperation of the International Basic Sciences Program (IBSP) and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and other scientific organizations; and organize scientific events and intellectual transfer through short-term activities.

According to experts, during the current international integration, Vietnam’s participation in the category two scientific centre network under the auspices of UNESCO indicates international recognition of Vietnam’s intellectual potential, which helps Vietnam’s sciences undergo deeper integration into the region and the world.

With the establishment of the two centres, Vietnam wants to show its responsibility in developing basic sciences by supporting countries in the region and other developing countries in boosting scientific development.

The Government of Vietnam has pledged to create the best conditions for the smooth operation of the two centres./.
