Vietnam first ever wins gold at international astronomy Olympiad

Vietnamese students won four medals, including one gold, one silver and two bronze, at the 12th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA).

This is the third time that Vietnam has participated in the annual competition for high school students and the first time that Vietnam has secured a gold medal.

With this achievement, the Vietnamese team ranked 10th among 38 participating countries.

The 12th IOAA took place in Beijing, China, from November 3rd to 11th with the participation of 71 teachers, 214 students and 28 observers from 46 teams worldwide. Participants competed in four English-written tests, namely observation test, theoretical test, data analysis test and team competition.

Tran Xuan Tung, a 12th grader, bagged the gold medal and Ho Phi Dung, an 11th grader, won the silver medal, while the bronze medals went to Le Tran Dao and Nguyen To Vinh Huy. All the team members are from the Hanoi-Amsterdam high school for the gifted.

On November 11th, Vietnamese Ambassador to China Dang Minh Khoi received the delegation. He congratulated the Vietnamese team and spoke highly of their achievement, adding that the outstanding results will contribute to promoting the student’s fondness of learning and the development of national education./.
