Each day, some 300 hundred people have volunteered to donate blood at its headquarters over the past weekend. Especially, we witnessed 600 volunteers in a peak day, in compared with 40 before.

The institute needs on average between 1,000-1,500 blood units per day for over 150 hospitals in Hanoi and the Northern region. Blood type O must account for at least 45 per cent of total blood, equivalent to 700 units.

Dr Bach Quoc Khanh, NIHBT Director, said that blood scarcity usually occurs from July to September and months close to lunar new year, so that it is an urgent message from NIHBT calling strong and active consideration from all social classes.

People can donate their blood at the NIHBT at Pham Van Bach street, Yen Hoa ward, Cau Giay district, Hanoi, from 08h00 to 22h00 or go to their nearest blood donation centre by checking www.nihbt.org.vn/Home/DiemHM.

Organizations should contact the Institute's Blood Donation Mobilisation and Organisation Department at 024 3868 6008 - 024 3782 1900./.

A blood type is a classification of blood based on the presence and absence of antibodies and also based on the presence or absence of inherited antigenic substances on the surface of red blood cells (RBCs). These antigens may be proteins, carbohydrates, glycoproteins, or glycolipids, depending on the blood group system.

Blood types are inherited and represent contributions from both parents. A total of 35 human blood group systems are now recognized by the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT). The two most important ones are ABO and the RhD antigen; they determine someone's blood type (A, B, AB and O, with +, − or Null denoting RhD status).
