Addressing the send-off ceremony, Nguyen Thien Nhan, Politburo member and Secretary of the city Party Committee, said that the image of volunteers who wear green shirts had become popular and left a good impression on residents’ hearts in every part of the country, as well as in Laos.

He expressed his belief that with their enthusiasm and spirit of devotion, the volunteers would realise their tasks, and gain precious experience in friendship and affection with people. “The volunteers will help the city deal with its problems, including traffic congestion, traffic accidents, environmental pollution and flooding,” he added.

Lasting to August 12th, this year’s summer campaign will be carried out across Ho Chi Minh city’s 24 districts; 14 southern, Central Highlands and central localities; and Tho Chu Island in Kien Giang province, while international voluntary activities will take place in Laos.

Under the campaign, the volunteers will focus on developing urban advanced lifestyle, protecting the environment, mitigating climate change consequences, joining social welfare activities; building up traffic culture; and assisting children.

In Laos, they will disseminate computing knowledge and agricultural production knowledge; transfer science and technology; set up teams for addressing socio-economic issues; teach Vietnamese language; and carry out cultural and sports exchanges.

On Tho Chu Island, islanders’ houses, the power and water systems and roads will be upgraded and built, while advanced technology on aquaculture will be transferred./.
