Over six million poor people provided free healthcare

Over the past four years, the humanitarian healthcare program has organized over 13,400 events for giving free medical check-ups and medicine to over six million people, using a capital of over VND1.318 trillion.

The figures were announced during a meeting held on January 11th to review the implementation of the program in the 2014-2017 period.

Addressing the meeting, Nguyen Thi Xuan Thu, President of the Vietnam Red Cross, stressed the program was of great humanitarian significance which was supported by doctors, hospitals, localities, businesses and people, confirming that the program would continue in the future in a more effective way.

Initiated by the General Department of Politics under the Vietnam People’s Army, the Ministry of Health, the Vietnam Red Cross and the Vietnamese Young Doctors' Association, the program aimed to mobilize social participation in humanitarian medical check-ups, contributing to caring for poor people’s and beneficiaries’ health.

With priority given to poor, remote, border and island districts, the program targeted providing humanitarian medical check-ups and free medicine to at least 1 million people nationwide.

As a result, over VND525 billion was spent on medicine; over VND448 billion on giving over 3.1 million presents to extremely disadvantaged people; and over VND225 billion on providing meals for poor patients at hospital, heart operations, housing and cow support for people in need.

Under the program supported by organizations, businesses and individuals, over 257,300 doctors, nurses, technicians and volunteers from hospitals joined medical check-ups, which was said to make important contributions to social welfare, and bring happiness for millions of poor people./.
