The project, which was funded by official development assistance (ODA) of the American Government through the US Agency for International Development since June 2011, has almost been completed. In the first phase, the project treated 45,000 cubic metres of dioxin infected land; and cleared 19 hectares of land, ponds and lakes, including 6 hectares having been assigned to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) for expanding the Da Nang international airport to serve the 2017 APEC Summit. The second phase, which is expected to be completed in 2018, will eliminate all health risks relating to dioxin exposure in areas where the project is being carried out.

Talking with relevant agencies, General Lich asked them to continue to strictly realise decrees and decisions issued by the Party, Government and the Ministry of National Defence relating to the work.

He urged agencies to encourage international cooperation and sponsorship and domestic resources to have more capital and technologies for dioxin treatment projects; increase the implementation of policies and medical support for soldiers and Agent Orange victims; and enhance environmental research and monitoring and master technologies for treating toxic chemicals after the war.

Minister Lich also asked for ensuring a safe area for local residents to boost socio-economic development and serve security and defence work./.
