Le Quang Liem sinks two places in World Chess rankings

(CPV) - Vietnam's No.1 chess player Le Quang Liem has dropped two places to No.23 in the men’s standard category, according to the latest Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) or World Chess Federation’s rankings announced on January 1st.

In December’s rankings in 2017, he ranked his best ever at No.21 with an Elo rating of 2737.

Earlier, the 27-year-old player placed 16th in the Blitz category and 30th in the Rapid category of the 2017 King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships (in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia between the December 26th and 30th).

Vietnam’s No.2 player, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son from Can Tho province, ranked 150th with an Elo rating of 2630.

The nation’s No.3 chess player, Tran Tuan Minh (20) from Hanoi capital, added 6.3 to his Elo rating, totalling 2538, thus ranking 443rd in the men’s standard category.

In the World Junior and Girls U20 Chess Championship in Tarvisio (Italy) last November, Tuan Minh ranked 8th with 7.5 points after 11 games.

He has become the 11th local player granted the International Grand Master title by FIDE in 2017.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old player Vo Thi Kim Phung from Central Thua Thien-Hue province gained the best achievement for Vietnam’s women standard category, ranking 40th with an Elo rating of 2425.

This year, the nation will send its best candidates to the 43rd Chess Olympiad, organised by the FIDE and comprising Open and Women's tournaments, will be held in Batumi (Georgia) from September 23rd to October 7th.

Besides, Vietnamese chess players set to compete at the Asian Seniors Chess Championship 2018 (a chess tournament open to all players from Asian Chess Federations, following the Swiss system and consists in two divisions, Open and Women's) in Tagaytay, the Philippines, from November 2nd-12th./.
