The Nepal Home Ministry said 49 people were killed and 36 were reported missing. Meanwhile, the International Red Cross said floods and landslides have claimed at least 53 lives over the past three days in the Terai region.

Flooding has occurred across the densely populated lowlands that border India, while some remote districts in the hilly areas of the far east have been hit by landslides triggered by the monsoon rains.

The rain is expected to continue in the coming days, according to the Nepal Meteorological Forecasting Division, raising fears that the rivers might wash more villages away.

In India, 45 bodies have been recovered in the Himalayan state, said Sandeep Kadam, a senior government official at the scene.

Landslides and flooding are common in the Himalayan region during the monsoon season, which runs from June through September./.
