Kyrgyz PM resigns to run in Presidential election

Kyrgyz Prime Minister Sooronbay Jeenbekov has resigned to run in the Presidential election in October.

"I am resigning due to the fact that I will run for president of the country. Today, after lunch, I will transfer the statement of resignation to President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev," Jeenbekov said.

Jeenbekov announced his decision at a cabinet meeting on August 21st, after the Central Election Commission registered Jeenbekov as a candidate in the October 15th election.

Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev accepted the resignation of the Prime Minister. This was reported by the information policy department of the President.

“I think that as Prime Minister you fully justified the hopes that were put on you. Your government was the best of all that was during my presidency”, the President said at a meeting with the Prime Minister.

Jeenbekov, a former governor of the Osh region in southern Kyrgyzstan, had been Prime Minister since April 2016.

Incumbent President Almazbek Atambayev will be ending his term on December 1st./.
