11 killed due to fire at home for elderly in Japan

According to Japanese media, 11 people were killed in a fire that engulfed a home for elderly welfare recipients in Sapporo, the capital of the northernmost Japanese prefecture of Hokkaido.

Witnesses saw smoke pouring from the 3-story facility in the city at around 23h40 on Wednesday (January 31st).

The fire was brought under control about two hours later, and the bodies of 11 people believed to be residents of the facility were discovered at the site.

The victims were among 16 residents of the facility run by a local organization that supports homeless people, the police said.

Five residents survived the fire. Three of them, from their 50s to 80s, were sent to hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation./.
