Algeria marks International Day of Living Together in Peace

The Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Algeria on May 16th celebrated the first edition of the “International Day of Living Together in Peace” in the capital city Algiers.

The event, chaired by Foreign Minister of Algeria Abdelkader Messahel, drew the participation of a number of Algerian Parliament members; international organizations and diplomatic delegations in Algeria.

It was marked by the message of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, which was read by UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Eric Ovevest.

In the message, Mr. Antonio Guterres stressed to continue promoting peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding and solidarity among countries around the world.

President of the Republic of Algeria Abdelaziz Bouteflika said in a message that the proclamation of this day is recognition of Algeria’s role in promoting peace.

“The proclamation of this day reflects the international community’s recognition of the steadily and successfully exerted efforts by our country for promoting the culture of peace, dialogue, mutual respect and tolerance among its own citizens," he added.

On December 8th, 2017, the UN General Assembly adopted, at the initiative of Algeria and the International Association of Sufi Alawiya (AISA), a resolution proclaiming May 16th as the International Day of Living Together in Peace.

The Day is a means of mobilizing the efforts of the international community to promote peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding and solidarity. It also aims to uphold the desire to live and act together, united in differences and diversity, in order to build a sustainable world of peace, solidarity and harmony./.
