DPRK, RoK begin dismantling mines along DMZ

Specialists from the Republic of Korea (RoK) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on October 1st began removing mines and other explosives at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

In a statement, the RoK Defence Ministry said the two sides agreed to remove all landmines in the so-called Joint Security Area (JSA) in Panmunjom within the next 20 days, with military engineers performing the hazardous task on the RoK side.

RoK army engineers with demining equipment were also deployed to the front line area called “Arrow Head Hill” where the two Koreas plan their first joint searches for soldiers killed during the 1950-1953 Korean War.

Project details were agreed on during the 3rd inter-Korean summit between RoK President Moon Jae-in and DPRK leader Kim Jong-un, which took place on September 18th in Pyongyang.

At the event, the two sides reached a number of agreements on Pyongyang’s military and nuclear facilities, and ushered in a new era of peace on the Korean peninsula.They also signed an accord on the enhancement of mutual trust./.
