Singapore’s Deputy PM appointed chairman of G30

On November 30th, Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam was named chairman of the Group of Thirty (G30) consultative group, succeeding outgoing chairman and former European Central Bank (ECB) president Jean-Claude Trichet.

Mr Tharman, who is also Singapore's Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies, will serve a five-year term as G30 chairman. His term will begin on January 1st, 2017.

He said of his appointment: “It will be a real privilege to succeed Jean-Claude Trichet, whose knowledge, wisdom and warmth have made him a role model for so many of us, in the G30 and beyond.

“I look forward to working closely with my colleagues in the Group as we continue to inform and influence dialogue within the global economic and financial community.”

Tharman Shanmugaratnam, born in 1956, is a Singaporean politician. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he has served as Deputy Prime Minister since 2011. He is also Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. He previously served as the Minister for Education from 2003 to 2008 and as the Minister for Finance from 2007 to 2015. He has been a member of parliament (MP) representing the Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC) since 2001.

In 2008, Mr Tharman became the first Singaporean to be inducted into the G30. He was Singapore's Finance Minister from 2007 to 2015, and chairman of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) international monetary and financial committee from 2011 to 2015./.
