Syrian President appoints new Prime Minister

On June 22nd, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad appointed Minister of Electricity Imad Khamis as the new Prime Minister of the country.

The President is also to submit his proposal for new ministerial appointments in the coming days.

Imad Khamis, born in 1961, served as the Syrian Minister of Electricity since 2011 and will replace Wael al-Halqi, who had held the post since August 2012.

The changes come two months after Assad's Baath party and its allies won a majority of seats in parliamentary elections.

Khamis was assigned to the management of a number of departments in the General Organization for the distribution of and investment in power from 1987 to 2005. He was Director General of the General Company for Electricity province of Damascus from 2005 to 2008. He was appointed General Director of the Public Corporation for the distribution of and investment in power in 2008./.
