Tsunami evacuation orders were issued in areas including Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate and Aomori by the weather agency, as the first tsunami wave was observed at the coast 20km East of Iwaki city in Fukushima prefecture, and then 1.4-meter tsunami waves were observed in Sendai in northeastern Miyagi prefecture after the quake.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck in the same region that was devastated by a tsunami in 2011, killing some 18,000 people.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world’s most seismically active areas. Japan accounts for about 20% of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater./.
