Chile to mark 5th anniversary of devastating earthquake - tsunami

Chile will mark the 5th anniversary of the devastating earthquake and tsunami which devastated millions of people on February 27th, 2010.

The earthquake of 2010 was the sixth largest ever recorded on a seismograph. With an epicenter 35 kilometers below the surface of the Pacific Ocean and 325 kilometers southwest of the Chilean capital Santiago, the quake, registering a magnitude 8.8 on the Richter scale was felt strongly by almost 80% of the countries entire population. Property damage was expected to reach around USD30 million.

Such was the severity of the earthquake and the tsunami that followed shortly afterward, 500 people lost their lives and over 2 million were injured or displaced particularly in the south-central region and the port of Talcahuano.

The largest earthquake ever recorded in Chile was in May 1960. A 9.5 quake that killed 1,655 and unleashed a tsunami that crossed the Pacific./.
