Antonio Tajani elected President of European Parliament

Antonio Tajani, a former Italian Air Force officer, has been elected new President of the European Parliament.

After four rounds of voting Antonio Tajani was victorious, receiving 351 votes and beating his fellow countryman Gianni Pittella who achieved a total of 202.
Tajani is an ex-spokesman of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. He was also a European Union Commissioner between 2008 and 2014.
He was previously one of 14 Vice-Presidents of the European Union and will succeed Mr. Martin Schulz who served as President for five years.
Born in 1953 in Rome, Tajani was also one of the Vice-Presidents of the European Commission./.
