UN Secretary-General strongly condemns twin terrorist attacks in Iraq

Guterres expressed his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured, said the spokesman.

"The Secretary-General reiterates that the United Nations will continue to stand by the government and people of Iraq in their efforts to fight terrorism and rebuild their country", he added

“I condemn the terrorist attacks in Baghdad and send my condolences to the people of Iraq. The UN stands with you”, the Secretary-General tweeted.

Earlier, Jan Kubis, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq and the head of the UN Assistance Mission in the country (UNAMI), also denounced the attack and said that despite a defeat on the battlefield, terrorist groups continue to pose a threat, in particular to ordinary citizens.

“I urge greater vigilance by the authorities and unity among the Iraqi people to thwart the aims of terrorists like Da’esh who seek to derail the country’s recovery after a long conflict,” said Mr. Kubis in a tweet by UNAMI.

On January 15th, two suicide bombings took place at al-Tayaran Square of Baghdad, killing 27 people and injuring more than 92 others. The attackers struck during rush hour in the city’s Tayran Square, which is usually crowded with labourers seeking work. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but it bore all the hallmarks of the Islamic State group, which has claimed many such attacks in the past./.
