(CPV) - A photo exhibition to promote equal sharing of parental leave between men and women was held at the Embassy of Sweden in Hanoi on March 3rd, in celebration of the International Women’s Day.

The event, titled “Swedish ads”, included a fantastic photo series created by Swedish photographer Johan Bävman, who strived to document Swedish fathers in their daily lives, taking advantage of Sweden’s generous paternity-leave legislation to spend more time with their kids.

Swedish Ambassador Camilla Mellander  speaking at the event

In her speech at the event, Swedish Ambassador Camilla Mellander said the exhibition is the Embassy’s contribution to the “HeforShe” campaign launched by UNWomen. She noted, “The Swedish government is a strong supporter of gender equality and is pursuing a feminist foreign policy.”

She stressed no other country in the world provides such generous terms of parental leave as Sweden does. Through Sweden’s welfare system, Swedish parents have the possibility to get 480 paid days of parental leave, receiving 80% of their salary.

On the occasion, the Embassy and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also launched a photo competition titled “Vietnamese dads”, with entries to be accepted from now till May 15th, 2016 and all Vietnamese citizens eligible to join.

The first, second and third prize will be worth VND10 million, 8 million and 7 million, respectively. While the first and the second prize will be selected by a jury board, the third prize will selected by a vote among the online community via Facebook. Entries should be sent to the Embassy of Sweden and can also be posted on Facebook under the hashtag #VietnameseDads.

Ms. Nguyen Phuong Hoa, Deputy General Director of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s International Cooperation Department, said gender equality is key to the development of Vietnam and can positively contribute to the advancement of the country in the future.

She hopes the competition will contribute to promoting gender equality and encourage the sharing of responsibilities between spouses in Vietnamese families, including child care and household chores./.
