Cashew exports report US$782 million turnover in first quarter

Vietnam exported 147,000 tonnes of cashew nuts worth US$782 million in the first quarter of the year, representing a rise of 31.8% in volume and 20.5% in value year on year, reported the Voice of Vietnam according to statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

March alone saw the country ship 55,000 tonnes of cashew nuts worth US$289 million abroad, up 106.8% in volume and 103.4% in value compared to February.

The average cashew export price in the first quarter dropped by 8.6% to US$5,329 per tonne against the same period in 2023.

In the reviewed period Vietnam increased the export of various types of cashew nuts compared to the same period last year, except for the cashew type of WS/WB, SP and DW.

Statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs indicate that the country mainly exported cashew nuts W320 and W240 in the first two months, accounting for 56.71% of the total export volume, making a positive impact on the local cashew market.

Day for Honouring Vietnamese Language 2024 launched in Japan

A ceremony was held on April 6 in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, to launch the Day for Honouring Vietnamese Language 2024, reported the Voice of Vietnam.

Addressing the event, which aims to foster Vietnamese teaching and learning among the Vietnamese community in the country, Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Pham Quang Hieu affirmed that supporting and encouraging the community to maintain cultural identity and preserve the Vietnamese language are one of the key tasks of the embassy.

The embassy and its community affairs board always create favourable conditions for teachers and Vietnamese language centres to promote the preservation of the mother tongue for generations of Vietnamese children in Japan.

The ambassador asked the Vietnamese community in Japan to be more active in the Vietnamese language teaching and learning movement. He also hoped that more attention will be paid to researching and compiling a curriculum which is suitable for children living in the East Asia nation, adding that the Vietnamese language learning movement in Japan will develop strongly in the coming time, meeting the needs of the community.

Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang, who is also Chairwoman of the State Commission for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (SCOVA), hailed associations in Japan for organising activities that help connect Vietnamese people at home and abroad and for their efforts to preserve the Vietnamese language.

Hang affirmed that the SCOVA will accompany the Vietnamese community in Japan through providing textbooks and organising training courses on Vietnamese language teaching skills for teachers and volunteers.

The same day, Deputy Minister Hang held working sessions with representatives of 10 Vietnamese associations in Japan during which they briefed about the outcome of their activities, including supporting each other to overcome difficulties, integrating into the host society, maintaining the Vietnamese language and national cultural identity as well as providing assistance to local residents who were affected by natural disasters.

The representatives also proposed to strengthen the teaching and learning of the Vietnamese language, connect with mass organisations in the home country, and promote communications work with the goal of building a united, strong community in Japan.

HCM City Int’l Film Festival 2024 opens

The Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival 2024 (HIFF 2024) opened in the southern metropolis on April 6, reported the Voice of Vietnam.

Running from April 6-13, the festival includes three main competition categories, including Southeast Asian films, debut and short films, with many awards such as Golden Star Award for Best Southeast Asian Film; Best Emerging Director; Best Short Film; and Ho Chi Minh City Film awards.  In addition, there are awards for directors, actors, cinematographers, editors, and visual effects, among others.

There will be a wide range of sideline activities with the participation of international artists and visitors, including a gala film screening; training courses conducted by directors, actors, producers, and experts who have a lot of experience in the movie industry; music and fashion performances; a food fair; a film industry exhibition introducing the development history of the movie industry of HCM City, Vietnam and the world, famous producers, directors, and movie stars in Nguyen Hue walking street; and seminars on the importance of funding for film development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the municipal People's committee Duong Anh Duc said that the locality is considered a large market for film production and distribution in the country. The film industry is identified as one of eight key industries, with an average growth rate of about 12% a year and revenue reaching over VND5 trillion (US$200 million), of which Vietnamese films account for about 30% of revenue, contributing about 0.4% of the city's GRDP by 2025.

Duc also said HIFF 2024 is expected to improve the quality and reputation of the city’s movie industry, and promote HCM City as a destination for domestic and foreign filmmakers, towards becoming a film city and join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

The HIFF 2024 received more than 400 entries, with 56 projects participating in the Project Market and 87 scripts joining the Vietnamese Script Incubator (VietScript Lab).

Vietnamese students raise fund for island residents, soldiers at home

The Union of Vietnam Students in France (UEVF) held a charity fair at the Vietnamese Cultural Centre in Paris on April 6 to raise fund for residents and soldiers on Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly), reported Vietnam News Agency.

The event attracted the participation of not only Vietnamese students, but also other representatives of the Vietnamese community in France.

Proceeds from the fair, to last until April 14, will be used to buy seawater filters and seedlings for the soldiers and residents, or presented directly to them, said UEVF President Nguyen Phan Bao Thuy, adding the event is expected to offer an opportunity for Vietnamese students and young people in France to contribute to national construction and defence.

Vietnamese Ambassador to France Dinh Toan Thang said the fair has helped strengthen solidarity among Vietnamese students and young people in the host country, and affirmed that the embassy always supports the union’s activities./.
