FDI disbursement in four months reaches 6.28 billion USD

The total foreign direct investment (FDI) disbursement in Vietnam in January April period is estimated to reach 6.28 billion USD, up 7.4% year on year, the highest four-month amount in the past five years, the Vietnam News Agency quoted the figures of the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The processing-manufacturing sector saw the largest amount at 4.93 billion USD, accounting for 78.5% of the total FDI disbursed in the country in the period.

It was followed by real estate business at 607.6 million USD, and production and distribution of electricity, gas, hot water, steam and air conditioning at 259.8 million USD.

According to the GSO, as of April 20, total FDI inflows in Vietnam had reached nearly 9.27 billion USD, a year-on-year rise of 4.5%.

Of the total, 7.11 billion USD was poured into 966 new projects, an increase of 28.8% in the number of projects and 73.2% in the capital amount.

Processing-manufacturing led the newly-registered FDI capital at nearly 5 billion USD, followed by real estate at 1.6 billion USD.

Among the 50 countries and territories with newly-licenced projects in Vietnam in the first four months of this year, Singapore was the biggest with 2.59 billion USD, making up 36.4% of the total.

Hong Kong (China) came second with 898.6 million USD, while Japan took the third position at 814.1 million USD.

At the same time, 1.23 billion USD was added into 345 underway projects, a drop of 25.6% year on year.

Meanwhile, foreign investors also poured 929.6 million USD into 902 capital contribution and share purchase deals in the January-April period.

The GSO also reported that in the first four months of this year, Vietnamese investors invested 98.3 million USD in 36 new projects abroad, down 29.8% year on year, along with 580,000 USD in three operating projects.

The Netherlands received the highest Vietnamese investment capital among the 14 countries and territories hosting Vietnamese-invested projects, with 54.6 million USD.

Vietnam secures two more tickets to Paris 2024 Summer Olympics

Vietnam's Nguyen Thuy Linh and Le Duc Phat ranked 17th and 37th in the latest Badminton World Federation rankings with 48,350 and 23,630 points, respectively, securing their spots to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics this summer, the Vietnam News Agency quoted the information of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Department of Sports and Physical Training on April 30.

Since 2022, both Linh and Phat have set their own determination to participate in various international tournaments in order to accumulate their individual points and achieve a good position on the Badminton World Federation rankings.

Currently, the players are focusing on training inside the country. They also plan to compete in some international tournaments in May and June for best preparation for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic.

So far, Vietnam has secured 10 official slots to participate in the Olympics, including those badminton, shooting, swimming, cycling), weightlifting, boxing, canoeing, and rowing.

Four-month trade surplus reaches US$8.4 billion

The first four months of this year witnessed Vietnam's import-export revenue hit US$ 238.88 billion, with a trade surplus of US$8.4 billion, higher than the figure of US$7.66 billion recorded in the same period from last year, Radio the Voice of Vietnam quoted the figures of the General Statistics Office (GSO).

April alone saw exports stand at an estimated US$30.94 billion, marking an annual rise of 10.6% to bring the total results in the reviewed period to US$123.64 billion, a on-year increase of 15%.

Of the total, the domestic sector contributed US$33.62 billion and the FDI sector US$90.02 billion. Exports of processed products stood at US$108.27 billion, accounting for 87.5% of the total.

The US represents Vietnam's largest export market with a revenue of US$34.1 billion, trailed by China with US$18 billion and the EU with US$16.4 billion.

In April, the country imported US$30.26 billion worth of products, a rise of 19.9% on-year, duly pushing the total import value in the four-month period to US$115.24 billion, up 15.4% over the same period from last year.

Imports of the domestic sector were US$41.86 billion, while that of the foreign-invested sector was US$73.38 billion.

Production materials were the major imports in the four-month period with a value of US$108.33 billion, making up 94% of the total imports.

China remained the nation’s biggest import market with a value of US$41.6 billion, whilst the Republic of Korea came second with US$17.1 billion.

The country also imported US$15.6 billion worth of goods from ASEAN member states in the January to April period, with the April trade surplus hitting US$0.68 billion, the GSO said.

Chau champions at world of chess for cadet

Winning all 11 matches, Nguyen Vu Bao Chau topped the FIDE World Cadet Rapid and Blitz Championship 2024 in Durres, Albania, which closed on April 29, said the Vietnam News Agency.

Chau set her domination having no worthy rival in the blitz event. In the last match against Yudina Agata who played under the jersey of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), she was with black pieces and moved second but it did not prevent her from taking the 11th win at the tournament.

Alisha Bissaliyeva of Kazakhstan came second with nine points, followed by Eliza-Ioana Badescu of Romania with seven.

It was Chau's second medal in Durres. Earlier, she took silver in the rapid event.

Vietnamese players also secure one silver by Nguyen Truong An Khang and one bronze by Nguyen Minh Chi.

Khang earned nine points after 11 matches in the Open U10, two less than champion Roman Shogdzhiev of FIDE. Alimzhan Zhauynbay of Kazakhstan placed third, having eight points.

Chi, meanwhile, finished second in the girls' U12, with seven points. Women FIDE Master Megan Althea Paragua of the US won the gold with nine points and Varvara Matskevich of Poland bagged bronze with seven points.

After five days of competitions, Vietnam secured one gold, two silvers and one bronze to place third in the medal tally. FIDE team was on top with three golds and one silver. The US came third with two golds and two bronzes.

After Albania, Vietnam will take part in the FIDE World School Rapid and Blitz Championships 2024 in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan from August 1-8./.
