Vietnamese woman named among 21 inspirational figures in Hungary

Dr. Phan Bich Thien, a Vietnamese woman residing in Hungary, has become the only foreign woman featured in a book which highlights 21 Hungarian women that have made significant contributions across various fields, including science, society, economy, arts, and sports, said the Vietnam News Agency.

The book narrates their life stories and motivations through conversations between writer and journalist Szabó Attila Zoltan and these women. They include Hungarian chess champion Krizsán Edith; renowned singer Csepregi Éva; Prof. Dr. Szirmai Ágnes, Hungary's first female professor in the fields of ear, nose, throat (ENT), and balance neurology and 107-year-old Gizella, among others.

The author portrayed Thien as a symbol of connection between Vietnam and Hungary, and between Asia and Europe, exemplifying tireless dedication to promoting Vietnamese culture in Hungarian society. He shared that Thien consistently prioritises the collective interests over her own, and she has helped Hungarians become more familiar with and understanding of Vietnam.

At the launching ceremony of the book in mid-September, Charge d'Affaires of the Vietnamese Embassy in Hungary Le Trong Ha praised this meaningful event as it demonstrated the successful integration of Thien and the Vietnamese community in the host country. These efforts will contribute significantly to the completion of procedures for Vietnamese people in Hungary to be recognised as ethnic minorities, which the embassy and the Vietnamese Association in Hungary are carrying out, he said.

For her part, Thien expressed her honour to be named among these inspirational Hungarian women. She believed that they are beautiful pieces of life's mosaic, contributing their strength, brainpower, and passion to the development of society, motivating others to overcome challenges in life.

After listening to Thien's sharing of information about the flood situation and hardships faced by the Vietnamese people, the author and the organising board agreed to transfer all the proceeds from the book sales worth nearly 300,000 HUF (849.5 USD) at the launching ceremony, to support people in need in Vietnam.

Petrovietnam to rebuild residential area in Lao Cai’s landslide-hit village

The Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam) will be responsible for the reconstruction of Kho Vang village residential area in Coc Lau commune, Bac Ha district, the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai, which was severely affected by a severe landslide caused by recent Typhoon Yagi, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

According to local reports, the residential area has 17 households, of which five were washed away. Before the landslide occurred, village head Vang Seo Chu, 33, proactively evacuated 115 residents, all from the Mong ethnic group, to a safe area.

Currently, 115 residents have been brought to a safe shelter by local authorities, while efforts to restore the village after the storm are underway. Notably, 23 children from the affected households have been welcomed back to school since September 15, ensuring that their education can continue normally.

After three days of discussions, Petrovietnam and local authorities have agreed on a location for the reconstruction of the residential area that is not too far from the old site.

This weekend, representatives from the group will go to Lao Cai to survey the area and discuss specific plans with local authorities to expedite the construction of a new residential area for the community to stabilise their lives.

The resettlement area will cover approximately 2.5 hectares, providing housing for around 40 households, and be built in a cinnamon hill area, about 1 km from the old location, in Coc Lau commune, Bac Ha district.

As of September 18, Petrovietnam, its affiliates, organisations, and employees had donated a total of 44.65 billion VND (1.8 million USD). The group plans to provide support to 21 provinces and cities.

Nine-month fruit and vegetable exports fetch over US$5.6 billion

Vietnamese fruit and vegetable exports during the past nine months of the year surged by 34% to reach US$5.644 billion, equal to the export turnover of the entire last year, Radio the Voice of Vietnam quoted the figures of the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

Most notably, September alone witnessed fruit and vegetable exports reach an unprecedented turnover of nearly US$1 billion, up 9.1% over the previous month and up 38% on-year.

These positive results can be attributed to the Central Highlands’ durian harvest season with durian export value exceeding US$500 million for the first time.

China remains the major consumer of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables. By the end of August, the northern neighbour had imported up to US$3 billion, accounting for 65%.

Statistics indicated that the country's fruit and vegetable imports during the reviewed period reached US$1.6 billion, up 13% on-year.
