Vietnam’s investment reaches nearly 150.7 million USD abroad in seven months

The Foreign Investment Agency (FIA) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment released that Vietnam’s overseas investment approximated 150.7 million USD in the first seven months of 2024, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

The amount was channeled in 64 new projects and added to 15 existing ones.

Vietnamese investors poured money into 12 sectors abroad during the reviewed period. The mining sector topped the list, accounting for 38.9% of the total, followed by processing-manufacturing (19.2%) and the wholesale and retail sector (16.4%), statistics showed.

Among the 23 countries and territories recording Vietnamese investments during the period, the Netherlands took the lead with 36.2%. It was followed by Laos (24.3%), US (12.4%), and Cambodia (8.2%).

As of July 20, Vietnam had 1,750 valid overseas investment projects with combined capital of nearly 22.27 billion USD, the majority of which, 31.6%, operated in the mining industry and 15.5% in the agro-forestry-fishery sector.

Laos was the largest recipient of Vietnamese investment with 24.7%. Cambodia ranked second and Venezuela came third with 13.1% and 8.3%, respectively, according to the FIA.

Hanoi’s FDI attraction hit 1.3 billion USD in 7 months

The capital city of Hanoi attracted 124.9 million USD in foreign direct investment (FDI) in July, bringing the total in the first seven months to 1.3 billion USD, 65% higher than the same period last year, said the Vietnam News Agency.

According to the municipal Statistics Office, over 1.1 billion USD was poured into 143 new projects in the January – July period, 138 million USD added to 102 existing projects, and 77 million USD spent on contributing capital to or purchasing shares of local companies.

In the first seven months, Hanoi had 18,000 newly established enterprises with a combined registered capital of 162.1 trillion VND (6.41 billion USD), a decrease of 2% in the number of companies and 9% in capital year-on-year.

Meanwhile, as many as 6,600 businesses resumed their operation, up 14% compared to the same period last year, and 18,200 others registered to temporarily suspend operations, 23% higher than that of the same period last year.

A total of 2,500 businesses dissolved, up 18% over the same period last year.

Business guide launched to support Mexican investors in Vietnam

The Western Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade (COMCE Occidente), the Vietnamese Embassy in Mexico and the Mexico's National Bank of Foreign Trade (Bancomext) on July 29 launched a business guide to support Mexican enterprises interested in the Vietnamese market, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

The 13-chapter document consists of information on Vietnam's economy and foreign trade, updates on bilateral trade, potential sectors and products, useful tools related to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), as well as contacts in Vietnam.

Speaking at the event, President of COMCE Occidente Miguel Ángel Landeros emphasised that the document provides valuable and practical information related to the business environment in Vietnam, while highlighting opportunities, challenges, and the most suitable methods to enter and expand business activities in the country.

He said that the relations between Mexico and Vietnam are being strengthened in all areas, and their trade ties will continue to grow strongly as both countries are members of the CPTPP.

Mexican Ambassador to Vietnam Alejandro Negrín said that as the CPTPP has come into effect, the business guide will further support Mexican businesses in exporting or expanding operations in the Vietnamese market.

For his part, Vietnamese Ambassador to Mexico Nguyen Van Hai affirmed that bilateral trade still has a lot of room for further development, especially as the two are large markets and have many similarities, with many products and industries complementing each other.

According to the Vietnam Trade Office in Mexico, bilateral trade turnover reached 3.1 billion USD in the first half of this year, up 22% over the same period last year, of which Vietnam’s exports to Mexico was worth 2.64 billion USD.

Vietnam Pho Festival 2024 to take place in Seoul in October

The Vietnam Pho Festival 2024 will be held in Seoul, the Republic of Korea (RoK) in October in an effort to promote Vietnamese culinary culture to international friends, said the Vietnam News Agency.

The festival marks the eight edition of the ‘Day of Pho’ held annually by daily newspaper Tuoi Tre (Youth). It aims to popularise Vietnamese cuisine, with a specific focus on Pho, a popular Vietnamese dish consisting of broth, rice noodles, herbs, and meat – usually beef or chicken.

At an event held in Ho Chi Minh City on July 29 to announce the festival, the organsing board said that main activities are scheduled to take place at Yeouido Park on October 5 - 6 and will feature a total of 40 booths from various brands in both Vietnam and the RoK.

As part of the festival, a series of promotional activities will be organised, such as a B2B matching session, a pho discovery event for Korean YouTubers and Pho lovers, an exhibition on the history of Pho, and traditional Vietnamese and Korean folk games.

Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi tre newspaper Le The Chu said that the festival is expected to introduce Vietnamese culinary cultural values to Korean people, promote the images and economic potential of Vietnam, and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Nguyen Dinh Dung, Counselor of the Vietnamese Embassy in the RoK said that there are about 300,000 Vietnamese people living in the RoK and many Korean people know about Vietnam and have good sentiments to the country.

He noted that there are many Vietnamese Pho restaurants in the RoK but they hardly have any connections. The festival will be an important event to promote Vietnamese culture to Koreans as well as the international community in the RoK.

Chairman of the Board of Members of Saigontourist Group Pham Huy Binh said that his group’s Korean partners, including tourism firms and airlines, highly appreciate the festival and consider it a solution to strengthen cultural tourism exchanges and attract more Korean visitors to Vietnam in the coming time.

Last year, the festival was held in Japan, attracting 85,000 visitors./.
