Vietnam’s mollusk exports rising

The export of mollusks and other aquatic products is forecast to remain on the rise in the rest of 2024, reported Vietnam News Agency based on statistics from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

According to the VASEP, the export turnover of Vietnam's mollusks in the first seven months of 2024 was estimated at over 95 million USD, up 24% year-on-year, of which that of clams stood at 52 million USD, scallops 14 million USD, snails 16 million USD, oysters over 8 million USD, and other aquatic products nearly 4 million USD.

Among these products, snails saw the highest growth rate compared to the same period in 2023, over 57%.

Nguyen Thi Van Ha, a market expert from VASEP, said that in the first seven months of 2024, China significantly increased its import of clams and scallops from Vietnam, with a rise of 120 times compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, the export value of other live, fresh, or frozen mollusks has also surged, surpassing 7 million USD, a year-on-year increase of nearly 82 times.

Over the past time, not only China but also other countries have been boosting their imports of Vietnamese molluscs, Ha added.

She also reported that currently, markets are also increasing their imports of rock lobsters, octopuses, and crabs. In the reviewed period, China raised its import of rock lobsters and other types of sea shrimp to an estimated 111 million USD, marking a 32% increase compared to the same period last year. As a result, the share of Vietnamese rock lobsters in China’s total import value for this product rose from 1% last year to 25.3% this year. Additionally, the export revenue of frozen rock lobsters to this market also saw a dramatic increase of 682%, topping 4.7 million USD.

For crabs, China and Hong Kong (China) remained the largest import markets for crabs and other crustaceans from Vietnam, accounting for 43% of the country's total. In July alone, crab and other crustacean exports to this market increased 20 times year-on-year, reaching nearly 13 million USD, bringing the figure in the first seven months to nearly 63 million USD, a year-on-year rise of 623%.

Exports to the US and Canada are also growing positively, with increases of 30% and 44%, respectively.

Meanwhile, exports to Japan have been on a downward trend for the past three months. The export value of crabs and other crustaceans to this market in the first seven months decreased slightly by 0.3% to over 40 million USD.

Da Nang enjoys 33% surge in seven-month tourist arrivals

The central tourism hub of Da Nang enjoyed a growth of 33% in terms of the number of visitors during the opening seven months of this year, reported the Voice of Vietnam according to the city's Statistics Office.

Most notably, the number of visitors served by local accommodation facilities were estimated to have reached 6.6 million, thereby reflecting a 33% increase compared to the same period from last year. Of the total, international tourists numbered 2.5 million.

July alone witnessed Da Nang welcome more than 470,000 foreign arrivals. Korean tourists continued to be the biggest source of visitors to the central city throughout the reviewed period.

Between January and July Da Nang recorded a revenue of over VND15 trillion from restaurant and accommodation services.

The central coastal city has set a goal of welcoming 8.4 million arrivals this year. It recently received 6.6 million arrivals in the seven-month period, meeting 80% of the yearly target.

This comes after local authorities launched the “Enjoy Da Nang Again” campaign starting on July 15 and lasting until the end of the year. It offers many souvenirs and incentive packages to Korean tourists returning to Da Nang for the second time since 2020. It is expected to provide visitors with interesting experiences which are unique to the central city.

Vietnam wins big at Korea International Youth Olympiad

Local students successfully brought home a special award, along with two gold and one silver medals, at the Korea International Youth Olympiad - KIYO 4i, which was held from August 4 to 6 in the Republic of Korea (RoK), reported the Voice of Vietnam.

The Vietnam 2 team, including five students from Hanoi and Quang Ninh province, bagged a gold medal and won the Grand Prix award at KIYO 4i.

Another gold medal went to the Vietnam 1 team which consisted of five students from Hanoi-Amsterdam high school for gift students, the High School for gifted students of Vietnam National University-Hanoi, and the High School for gifted students under Hanoi National University of Education.

Three students from secondary schools in the northern provinces of Bac Ninh and Ha Nam who were members of Vietnam 3 team also clinched a silver medal.

Organised by the World Women Inventors and Entrepreneurs Association, KIYO 4i promotes the spirit of four “I’s” – Idea, Invention, Innovation, Intellectual Property.

The event aims to provide an important venue for young people to come together to enhance their creativity in science and technology whilst gaining worldly experience by travelling and competing abroad.

This year’s event drew the participation of over 190 teams from 10 countries around the world.

Vietnam to host first ITF beach tennis tournament

The country is scheduled to host the International Tennis Federation (ITF) BT50 Fleur De Lys Cup 2024 for the first time which is due to take place in Quy Nhon city from August 18 to August 21, reported the Voice of Vietnam.

The event will also feature players from many countries around the world, including Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Slovakia, and Latvia who will come together to compete in the ITF BT50 Vietravel Cup 2024 from August 22 to August 25, also in Quy Nhon city.

Players will vie for the championship title in two categories, including the men’s doubles and women’s doubles. The entry fee will be US$70 per team.

The total prize money on offer from the two tournaments is worth up to US$8,000.

The Xuan Dieu Beach, one of the most beautiful locations in the area boasting white sand and crystal-clear waters in Binh Dinh's Quy Nhon City, will be a venue of the two tournaments.

Beach tennis is a game combining tennis and volleyball and played on sand. It has been played in over 50 countries and by more than half a million people since 1970./.
