Accordingly, the second support package will be given to 3 groups, including 344,000 freelance workers receiving VND1.5 million each, 90,500 poor families and those living near the poverty line receiving VND1.5 million each, and 170,000 poor in rented houses or isolated areas receiving VND1.5 million each.

According to Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Le Minh Tan, the City People's Committee directed localities to deploy the allowance to wards, communes, hamlets and residential areas within 5 days.

He said that the second support package does not discriminate between temporary and permanent residents. All poor workers who are present in the city will be eligible for help.

This is the second time in the year that Ho Chi Minh City has implemented a support package for people affected by COVID-19. At the end of June, the city approved the first support package with VND886 billion. In addition to 344,000 freelance workers, the package also helped 80,000 workers who had to stop working; 60,000 business points in traditional markets; 9,000 business households; and people in concentrated isolation as well as the anti-pandemic forces.

"The support will not stop at just one week but will be for many weeks and months to come,” said Phan Van Mai, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee. “We will mobilize all resources from the people of the city and the whole country, with the budget and reserve funds when needed.”

In the official dispatch requesting 19 southern provinces and cities to extend 14 days of social distancing on July 31, the Prime Minister suggested that localities should soon take measures to support life and health so people can feel safe at home./.
