Indian House of Commons observes one minute of silence for Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong

Before the Indian House of Commons' budget session on July 22, Vice President and Chairman of the Indian Senate Jagdeep Dhankhar and Speaker of the House of Commons Om Birla delivered messages of condolence over the passing of Vietnamese Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

In the House of Commons, members of parliament observed a minute of silence after Speaker Om Birla read the condolence message. The Indian Parliament expressed sympathy with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s family and the people of Vietnam, reaffirming their solidarity with the leadership and people of Vietnam during this time of sorrow.

The Indian Parliament acknowledged the contributions and astute leadership of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in advancing Vietnam's progress and development over the past decades. They also highlighted his significant role in fostering the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Vietnam.

Vice President and Chairman of the Senate Jagdeep Dhankhar, addressing the parliament, said, "I am deeply saddened to announce that His Excellency Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, passed away on July 19, 2024, in Hanoi, at the age of 80." He emphasized that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong had held Vietnam's highest leadership position for 13 years, earning respect from all levels of society.

Speaker Om Birla recalled Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s visit to India in 2013 and their meeting in Hanoi in April 2022. "We extend our deepest condolences to the Government of Vietnam, to the leadership and our dear friends of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on the passing of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong," he said, paying tribute to "a great soul" who had departed.

Earlier, President of India Droupadi Murmu, on behalf of the Indian government and people, extended heartfelt condolences to President To Lam on the passing of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sorrow upon hearing the news. Indian leaders paid their respects to the deceased, offering deep condolences and expressing their desire to stand by the Vietnamese people and leadership during this painful time./.
