Dutch firms seek investment and business opportunities in Vietnam

From March 20th to 23rd, a delegation of 20 companies, universities and research institutes, led by Ms. Marjolijin Sonnema, Deputy Minister in charge of agriculture of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs is visiting and working at Ho Chi Minh city, Vinh Long and Hanoi.

The visit aims to seek more investment and business opportunities in the agricultural sector in Vietnam.

On March 20th, the delegation joined a talk to share the European country’s experience in developing sustainable agriculture in the context of climate change.

The talk focused on discussing agricultural conversion demand towards sustainable development of the Mekong Delta, feasible solutions for crop productivity increase in the salinity and drought condition in the Mekong Delta and initiatives to establish sustainable pepper production chain.

Agriculture in the Mekong Delta can not be developed sustainably with the current circumstance. To change the actuality, Vietnam should to expand cooperation for a long-term plan. “Aiming at sustainable development, Vietnam’s agriculture needs great changes in various phases,” Ms. Sonnema said. 

Also at the event, Dutch and Vietnamese enterprises signed some deals to support equipment production and purchase and knowledge conversion; carry out sustainable agricultural system and hi-tech; cooperate to introduce certificate of international standards to develop agricultural value chain.

This is not the first time Dutch companies showed their interest in investing and developing the country’s agriculture. Earlier, in the end of 2016, 34 Dutch enterprises, universities and institutes visited Vietnam to seek opportunities and expand solutions to support farmers in the value added chain to increase income.

The Vietnam-Netherland trade is still growing. In 2015, Vietnam’s exports to the Netherlands rose 42% while imports from the market increased 37% over a year earlier. The country is the Vietnam’s second biggest trade partner among EU countries and is the biggest investor of the EU in Vietnam by 2015./.
