According to statistics from the International Trade Center (ITC), China's import of fresh litchi in 2019 from Vietnam reached over 65,000 tons, worth USD28.8 million, up 108.4% in volume and 78.39% in value compared to 2018.

In the first 4 months of 2020, China's litchi imports reached 173 tons, worth USD190,000, a year-on-year increase of 77% in volume and 288.7% in value.

Due to COVID-19, China’s import of litchi from Vietnam saw a sharp decrease compared to the same period in 2019, while its imports from Thailand increased sharply, accounting for 82.44% of total litchi import of this country.

However, apart from fresh litchi, China uses dried litchi to make jam, confectionery, medicine, juice, and alcohol. Every year, although the output of Chinese fresh litchi is about 1.55 million tons, accounting for 50% of total world production, it does not meet domestic demand, forcing the country to import more litchi.

In early June, Vietnam allowed 309 Chinese traders to enter Vietnam to buy litchi in Bac Giang province; they are now in isolation to prevent COVID-19. Therefore, in the coming months, Chinese litchi import from Vietnam will increase sharply as the country enters the main litchi season./.
