“Gender Responsive Equitable Agriculture and Tourism” (GREAT), the largest project funded by Australia for the northern mountainous provinces of Lao Cai and Son La, is being carried out from 2017-2027 with a total value of 67.4 million AUD.

The project aims to enhance the economic empowerment of women, especially ethnic minority women in Lao Cai and Son La.

The first phase of the project (from 2018-2022) was implemented with many activities that helped 6,819 Lao Cai women increase their income; 1,568 women have new jobs, and 86% of women feel more confident. It mobilized 3.14 million USD in private investment in agriculture and tourism.

In Lao Cai, the second phase of the project is being implemented from 2022-2027 in most districts, towns and cities with a total investment of more than 244 billion VND, of which non-refundable ODA capital of over 236 billion VND is from the Australian Government.

The focus of the project is to develop the market system for agricultural products, strengthen the capacity of the tourism industry, thereby increasing the economic empowerment of women. As scheduled, more than 14,000 women, 70% of whom are ethnic minority women living in Lao Cai, will benefit from the GREAT 2 Lao Cai Project.

The project is expected to help improve women’s income, participation in socio-economic activities, position and confidence in the family, community and production and business environment. Through the project, it contributes to supporting Lao Cai to implement national target programs and Vietnam’s gender equality strategy./.
