Japan strengthens support for Vietnam in energy transition

(CPV) - Vietnam, as well as ASEAN, always attaches importance to its relationship with Japan. ASEAN-Japan cooperation has been expanded in many areas, and potential cooperation areas such as green economy, digital economy, circular economy and green energy are expected to be enhanced in the near future.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long on July 30 worked with Mr. Yamada Takio, Ambassador in charge of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) of the Japanese Government cum Advisor to the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

AZEC was proposed by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida before the Japanese Parliament on January 17, 2022 and at the World Economic Forum on January 18, 2022.

For Vietnam, AZEC has been assigned by the Prime Minister to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to chair. Accordingly, AZEC plays a significant role in promoting public-private partnerships and cooperation in the private sector to promote the regional energy transition. ASEAN countries highly appreciate this initiative of Japan, in particular, AZEC also contributes to Vietnam’s implementation of its commitments at COP26.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Electricity and Renewable Energy Department, together with the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), established an AZEC promotion working group. It aims to support energy transition, green transition at power plants using fossil fuels in Vietnam; renewable energy generation such as developing rooftop solar power, offshore wind power, waste-to-energy, biomass power and the power systems and electricity markets such as promoting the DPPA mechanism.

The two sides agreed to focus on research, development and diversification of clean energy sources and new technologies.

At the same time, they agreed to promote technology transfer to ensure that clean energy sources are widely accessible and ensure a clean energy transition suitable to the conditions of each country.

In addition, the two sides will continue to strengthen cooperation in training high-quality human resources, smart governance and perfecting modern market institutions suitable to each country.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long also expressed his hope that Japan would increase support for the Ministry of Industry and Trade in the field of energy conversion, green energy development and offshore wind power, contributing to helping Vietnam achieve the NetZero goal by 2050./.
