Kien Giang launches 1 million hectares of specialized rice cultivation with high quality and low emissions

The Kien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on July 16 launched the project of one million hectares of specialized rice cultivation with high quality and low emissions associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta until 2030.

Phu Hoa Youth Agricultural Service Cooperative in Tan Hoi commune, Tan Hiep district is the first unit to launch the project with an area of 50 hectares and the participation of 25 households.

According to Mr. Le Huu Toan, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Mekong Delta province will implement the project on an area of 200,000 hectares, divided into 2 phases.

Accordingly, the first phase (2024-2025) will focus on consolidating the existing areas of the sustainable agricultural transformation project in Vietnam and expanding the area to 100,000 hectares. In the second phase, the locality will develop high-quality specialized rice areas to reduce emissions on an additional 100,000 hectares to reach the goal of 200,000 hectares specializing in high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation.

Mr. Le Thanh Tung, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, shared that the project aims to increase the value of the entire chain by 40% and the profit of rice growers by 50%. At the same time, it will focus on protecting the environment and reducing greenhouse emissions, aiming for sustainable production of the rice industry.

On this occasion, Kien Giang demonstrated the practice of applying advanced technology in the pilot model "Rice farming to reduce emissions, manage straw, water and fertilizer" of the Phu Hoa Youth Agricultural Service Cooperative./.
