In Vietnam’s national energy development strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2045, the Politburo set the task of developing the gas industry because its use is consistent with current world trends; helping reduce dependence on coal thermoelectricity, reduce emissions, protect the environment and aim at the country's sustainable development.

The Vietnamese Government has oriented the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LNG) for electricity production since the begining of the 21st century. Specifically, LNG import infrastructure development projects have been planned in Vietnam’s gas industry development master plan until 2025, with a vision to 2035 (Gas Planning) and the National Electricity Development Plan in 2011-2020, with a vision to 2030.
Currently, under the direction of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is urgently completing the National Energy Plan and Power VIII Plan, which sets out very specific and clear content on the use of LNG for the country’s overall energy goals.
The Vietnamese government and state agencies are clearly aware of the importance of LNG in the context of energy development associated with environmental protection, as well as prediction on a shortage of gas resources in the Southern region in the future. Therefore, the country is urgently implementing a series of instructions and activities for big LNG power projects. Specifically, according to the adjusted Power VII Plan, in 2025-2030, it is necessary to build new LNG power plants with a total capacity of 15,000-19,000 MW.
At the same time, in the Gas Industry Development Plan until 2025, orientation to 2035 clearly identifies the necessity to build infrastructure to be ready to receive imported LNG with a volume of 1 to 4 billion m3 a year in 2021-2025 and 6 to 10 billion m3 a year in 2026-2035. The majority of imported LNG will be used to produce electricity, serving the demand of the country’s socio-economic development.
The world LNG supply before 2025 is assessed to be abundant and can meet the volume of LNG for the Vietnamese market along with favorable conditions because the market is considered a market of buyers.
Currently, dozens of gas power projects in the country are being implemented very successfully. Vietnam’s potential for gas power development is huge but is currently not fully exploited, so it is necessary to continue to explore and use new technology with high efficiency and low cost./.
