Catfish is among seafood products imported with great value to the US. Of which, Vietnamese pangasius holds overwhelming market share in both quantity and value.
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) quoted information from the US National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) that in the first eight months of 2021, the US imported over 83,000 tons of pangasius and catfish from 25 countries, worth 235.5 million USD.

Specifically, imports of pangasius from Vietnam made up 93% in volume and 90.5% in value, representing 77,500 tons and nearly 213 million USD.
The second largest supplier to the US market is China with nearly 5,000 tons, worth over 17 million USD, accounting for 6% in volume and 7.3% in value. Other sources of supply account for a negligible proportion.
In the 8 months, the average import price of Vietnam’s pangasius was 2.74 USD per kg, while the import price from China was 3.44 USD per kg./.
