Ngo Thanh Son, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, announced that on August 31, during a global online event, the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation named Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong as one of the five recipients of this year’s award.

Professor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong was recognized as a Vietnamese doctor who has made significant contributions to researching the devastating effects of Agent Orange/dioxin on human health and reproductive health of the victims. She has persistently pursued justice for the victims of Agent Orange/dioxin, providing evidence that it is never too late to correct the mistakes of war, fight for justice and offer relief to its unfortunate victims.

Sharing her emotions, Professor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong expressed that she was very happy to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award. However, throughout her life, the greatest joys have come from meeting the patients she has helped or the young doctors she has trained.

Born in 1944, Professor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong currently serves as non-permanent Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, President of the City’s Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Association, and Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Previously, Dr. Phuong was the Director of Tu Du Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, former Director of the City’s Heart Institute, former Vice President of the Vietnam Association for Victims of Agent Orange/dioxin, and former President of the Vietnam-U.S. Friendship Association of Ho Chi Minh City. She has been awarded the titles of Labor Hero, People’s Doctor, and the Third-Class Labor Order by the State.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award, established in 1957, is an annual award regarded as the "Asian Nobel Prize," honoring those who selflessly serve the development of the peoples of Asia. The 66th Ramon Magsaysay Award ceremony will be held on November 16, 2024, at the Metropolitan Theater in Manila, the Philippines.

In addition to Professor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, this year’s award also honors Karma Phuntsho (Bhutan), Farwiza Farhan (Indonesia), Miyazaki Hayao (Japan), and the Rural Doctors Movement in Thailand, which assists the rural poor./.
