Hanoi’s Department of Education and Training and the Vietnam Language Link Centre launched the 2010 English Olympiad for primary school students in Hanoi on March 20.

The 7th annual event aims to encourage studying English at primary schools.

The contest this year attracted nearly 1,500 students from 29 districts in Hanoi, who are competing in the preliminary round with a 45-minute writing test. The best 150 students will be chosen to enter the final to be held at the Revolutionary Museum on 25 Ton Dan street on April 3.

Gavan Iacono, executive director of Language Link, said this contest sets questions and marks following international standards. The event will help Vietnamese students gradually approach advanced education in the world, he added.

Prizes will be awarded worth a total of VND160 million.
