From August 9-11, Japan-based Asia-Pacific Prevention of Blindness Association (APBA – Japan) coordinated with Dong Trieu district hospital in the northern province of Quang Ninh to provide free eye surgeries to more than 100 elderly people.
These patients were suffering from cataracts and came from 21 communes and towns in the district.
The total expenditure for surgeries was over VND500 million, not counting other costs such as operation support tools, medicines for treatment, and supplements.
The charity activity contributed to bringing light to old people.
Earlier, in March, doctors also performed surgical procedures to protect the eyesight of 97 needy people and policy beneficiaries in Thanh Hoa province. These treatments, worth VND400 million, were underwritten by APBA – Japan.
APBA has been a leading benefactor of ophthalmology in Vietnam and has offered free eye surgeries in numerous Vietnamese provinces and cities over the past years, including Tuyen Quang, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thua Thien - Hue, Binh Thuan, Dong Nai and Ca Mau.
The Association plans to continue to provide free treatments for the poor and to promote surgical technological advancement to Vietnamese doctors, including the Phaco technology for operations on patients with cataracts./.
