The northern province of Quang Ninh has gained positive results in the fight against drug crime in the province, contributing to creating a healthy and stable environment facilitating socio-economic development, according to major-general Vu Chi Thuc, Director of the provincial Police and deputy head of the provincial steering committee of the Government’s national program on crime prevention.

During an interview with Quang Ninh newspaper, major-general Vu Chi Thuc said that in the initial months of 2013, there has been complex development in drug crime and drug use, especially along the border and in some other key areas.

There is still a large number of drug users in the province with over 1,300 managed and 838 undergoing detoxification at the provincial labour education centre, as of May 31.

In the first half of the year, the province detected the cultivation of 130 marijuana plants.

Authorised agencies have discovered diverse illegally traded lines of large amounts of drugs, with more and more complicated and venturesome ways of trade. In the initial months of 2013, the agencies investigated 236 cases involving 335 drug criminals, a year-on-year increase of 13.7% and 12.4%, respectively, seizing contraband including three times the amount of heroin seized in the same period last year (over 40 kg), 1.09 kg of ecstasy and over 1.1 kg of marijuana.

According to Mr. Thuc, in the upcoming time, the province will continue to carry out measures that are effective in fighting drug crime and drug use.

He noted that families, schools and society should increase education of young people, while encouraging all classes of people to join in the fight against drug crime and drug use.

He went on to say that Quang Ninh province will propose that the National Committee for AIDS, Drugs and Prostitution Prevention continue to instruct the implementation of projects on drug prevention in the 2012-2015 period, and classify the different types of ecstasy, and appropriate treatment and detoxification for ecstasy users.

It will also suggest that the Ministry of Health update kinds of ecstasy to instruct authorised agencies how to detect it, and organize suitable and effective detoxification programs, according Mr. Thuc./.
