Animals Asia and the Dak Lak provincial People’s Committee on May 23rd signed a cooperation deal on a project to preserve elephants in Vietnam, with a capital of USD50,000 in 2016 and 2017.

Veterinarians and staff of Animals Asia give medical treatment to an elephant in Dak Lak province.
This was the first time Dak Lak province has signed a deal with an international organization on wildlife preservation in the province.

According to the deal, the capital will be distributed to the provincial elephant preservation centre to increase its ability to deliver quality elephant care.

Throughout the time that the project is carried out, Animals Asia will send experts and veterinarians to assist in the building of facilities to care for and manage elephants; and raise the skill and ability of staff members and veterinarians to care for and treat elephants at the centre.

Under the project, wild elephants suffering injuries and domesticated elephants not receiving adequate care will be considered priority for rescue.

60% of the project value will be used to provide facilities for giving medical care to elephants, while some USD12,000 will be spent training local veterinarians and staff.

During the signing ceremony, Vu Van Dong, Deputy Director of the Dak Lak provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, recognised and appreciated the support of Animals Asia in preserving the precious population of elephants.

Since 2014, Animals Asia has carried out diverse programs assisting the operation of the Dak Lak provincial elephant preservation centre, including sending international experts to give medical check-ups to 36 individual elephants, training the centre’s staff, and assisting in the design and construction of infrastructure. It also sent international veterinary experts to conduct surgery on an injured elephant in 2015./.
