Nguyen Toan Thang, Director of the city Department of Natural Resources and Environment, said that the department had worked with Vingroup to allocate 1,000 public dustbins worth some VND700 million across 24 districts. Each dustbin has two compartments, one for containing organic waste and the other for different kinds of waste, thus helping to classify waste at the source.

Earlier, the Ho Chi Minh city Urban Environment Company presented the 1,200 dustbins, of 95 liters each, to Districts 1, 3, 4 and 12.

In mid-2017, 100 smart dustbins were placed in the city, aiming to improve the quality and quantity of the public dustbin system.

The smart dustbins have two compartments, for organic and inorganic waste, and their two sides are connected with 2 spaces for 2 trees which are grown by water leaked from the waste. In addition, the reflective covers of the dustbins help people see them and dump in at night.

A representative from the initiative of the smart dustbins, the Bridgestone Vietnam Company, said that in the near future, the company will design dustbins that are integrated with high technologies, including emitting wifi and charging mobile phones using solar energy, besides the current functions of providing reflected light, filtering water for trees and classifying waste.

According to Mr. Thang, the city will continue to call on social investment in dustbins across the city, making contribution to protecting the environment, as the city each day releases such great amount of household and individual waste, at some 8,300 tons./.
