The information was announced during a meeting to review international support activities in natural disaster mitigation this year for Vietnam, which was held on December 16 by the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, in collaboration with German international organization GIZ.

In 2020, Vietnam continued to suffer heavy losses due to unusual natural disasters such as hail, drought, saline intrusion, earthquakes, storms, floods and landslides. Local efforts have been made to overcome the consequences of natural disasters and mitigate the economic losses estimated at VND35 trillion.

Particularly, the large-scale flood from mid-September to mid-November this year in the central region left 249 people dead or missing, hundreds of thousands of houses damaged, and agricultural production severely affected, causing loss of over VND30 trillion.

In response to the call of the Vietnamese Government and the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control to support the people in central Vietnam with disaster recovery, members of the Disaster Risk Mitigation Partnership and international agencies have taken timely and practical action.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control Nguyen Hoang Hiep expressed his thanks to international organizations and affirmed their important role in supporting Vietnam and its people in overcoming difficulties, soon stabilizing their lives and rebuilding infrastructure after natural disasters./.
