Can Tho city boosts sustainable poverty reduction

Can Tho city basically completed the national target program for sustainable poverty reduction in 2020. Support policies were promptly implemented, creating conditions for poor families and those who live near the poverty line to escape poverty sustainably. Currently, the poverty rate is reduced to only 0.3%.

According to Mr. Ngo Tau, Deputy Head of the Cai Rang Department of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs, in 2020, the district built and repaired 37 houses, worth over VND1,492 billion; allocated preferential loans of over VND3,653 billion to help poor families and those who live near the poverty line or have newly escaped poverty to expand production and small business, contributing to reducing the poverty rate to 0.12% as of the end of this year.

Thoi Lai district effectively implemented support policies, helping reduce the household poverty rate to 0.99%. this year, it built 138 houses for poor households, using a capital of VND4,873 billion; and allocated VND52,362 billion in preferential loans to support 2,180 help poor families and those who live near the poverty line or have newly escaped poverty, expand production and small business.

In 2020, the city mobilized the construction of 485 houses for the poor; granted 43,556 health insurance cards to the poor and near poor; allocated VND648 billion in preferential loans to support production, small business and services. Agencies and unions mobilized resources of over VND75,725 billion and 227 tons of rice in communities to support poor and near poor people. About 44,983 poor and near-poor households affected by the COVID-19 pandemic were supported with VND33,736 billion according to Resolution 42/NQ-CP of the Government.

Statistics from a survey showed that by the end of 2020, the city still had 1,086 poor households, a rate of 0.3%. Mr. Tieu Minh Duong, Deputy Director of the city's Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, said that the city focused on implementing poverty reduction policies and projects, helping people increase income and improve living standards, thus creating a positive change in improving the quality of material and spiritual life of the poor, gradually narrowing the rich-poor gap and ensuring social security./.
