Cambodia's exports of garment and accessories from Cambodia rose by 3.3 percent to 5.02 billion USD in the first eight months of 2021, compared to 4.86 billion USD in the same period last year, the Khmer Times cited statistics from the Ministry of Commerce as reporting.

The value of apparel product exports accounted for 45 percent of the country’s total exports of 11.08 billion USD during the period. The US, the EU, the UK and Japan are the major apparel export destinations of Cambodia.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said on September 17 that the garment sector has received a surge of purchase orders.

This was because of uncertainty of production in garment-producing countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Brazil, caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, he added.

In 2020, Cambodia exported garments worth 7.42 billion USD, a year-on-year decrease of 10.24 percent, according to the 2020 annual performance report of the Ministry of Commerce.

The garment industry is the largest foreign exchange earner for the nation. The sector consists of about 1,100 factories and branches, employing approximately 750,000 workers, mostly female, according to the Labour Ministry./.
