Prime Minister agrees to submit to UNESCO profiles on two intangible cultural heritages

The Prime Minister has agreed with the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism on behalf of the Government to sign dossiers on Xoe Thai dance and Cham ethnic pottery making arts to submit to UNESCO to seek the title intangible cultural heritage of humanity and intangible cultural relics that needs urgent protection.

The Prime Minister asked Minster of Culture, Sports and Tourism to coordinate with Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO to carry out necessary procedures to send the dossiers to UNESCO by March 31st, 2019.

Xoe Thai dance 

The specific traditional Xoe Thai dance is associated with the life of Thai ethnic minority group in northwestern Vietnam, especially in provinces of Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La and Yen Bai. It is performed during community festivals, funerals, art performances and exchanges.

The dance has been developed, protected and handed down through generations intact over hundreds of years in many different forms including xoe quat (xoe dance with a fan), xoe khan (xoe dance with a scarf), xoe non (xoe dance with a conical hat) and many others, with contents reflecting community activities and expressing the Thai people’s emotion and ancestral spirits. With gentle and alluring rhythms, dancers usually form a circle around a festive flame and move to the sound of melodic traditional music.

Cham ethnic pottery making arts has a great role in socio-economic and cultural life. The products are indispensable in the daily life of each family and the belief culture of the Cham ethnic people. The whole process of pottery making exudes a characteristic artistic value. Therefore, despite many ups and downs in the development process, arts still exists with time, keeping the essence and wild beauty of the ancient pottery hundreds of years ago. 

It is the unique and lasting value of Cham pottery, worthy of recognition by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of mankind./
