Russian group raises voice on Vietnam halting Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant project

After Vietnam issued a press communiqué on its halting of Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant project, a representative from ROSATOM Group sent to Vietnam News Agency representative agency in Moscow its official declaration about the halt.

Accordingly, the group representative said that based on macroeconomic conditions, the Government of Vietnam had decided to halt the Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant project, to be carried out by the Russian Federation and Japan, adding that the group respects the customer’s decision, and will be willing to help Vietnam in case its Government re-activates the national nuclear power project.

The Russian Federation and Vietnam have set up a long-term bilateral cooperation in the nuclear power industry. The Da Lat Nuclear Research Institute will allow Vietnam to continue the development of nuclear technology with the assistance from the Russian Federation, including the building of essential infrastructure as a foundation for the development of nuclear energy for the peaceful purposes of the nation.

The guideline of the building of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant project was adopted by the Vietnamese National Assembly in 2009 with 2 expected plants. Each plant has 2 groups of engines, for a capacity of 2,000 MW. plant No. 1 was inaugurated in 2014 in Phuoc Dinh commune, Thuan Nam district, with its first group of engines expected to be put into operation in 2020./.
