Vietnam, Indonesia agree to further develop bilateral relations

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh on February 20th met with Indonesia Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi as he attended the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat (AMM Retreat) in the Philippines’ Boracay city.

During the meeting, the two sides agreed to deepen the traditional friendship and strategic partnership relations by exchanging high-ranking visits in 2017, including the Indonesian President’s visit to Vietnam and the Vietnamese State President’s visit to Indonesia.

The two sides also agreed to promote cooperation mechanisms, especially the Committee for Bilateral Cooperation at the Foreign Minister level, which will be held in Vietnam in the third quarter of 2017, and the Joint Committee on Economics, Science and Technology.

They reached a consensus on increasing cooperation in security and defence, pledging to be willing to share information, and strictly coordinate with each other to prevent terrorism, contributing to maintaining a peaceful and stable environment for development. The two Foreign Ministers stressed to need to promptly carry out the demarcation of exclusive economic zone at the continental shelf of the two countries.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh appreciated the coordination of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry in addressing the issue of recently arrested Vietnamese fishermen, and expressed his hope that Indonesia would continue to tackle the issue with a humanitarian spirit, suiting the Vietnam – Indonesia strategic partnership relations.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi agreed to strictly work with Vietnam in the 2017 APEC Year and promote ASEAN to develop on the 3 pillars of politics – security, economics and culture, and expand cooperation with the outside.

They were together on increasing cooperation, coordination and support for the Philippines to realise the 2017 Presidency, so that ASEAN policies and guidelines on regional issues would continue to be effectively carried out.

Talking about East Sea issues, the two sides stressed the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, maritime and aviation safety; being consistent in addressing disputes with peaceful measures in accordance with international laws, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as well as other diplomatic and legal progresses; and working with other ASEAN countries in efficiently realizing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and promptly reaching the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC)./.
