Addressing the meeting, President of the city Vietnam – Singapore Friendship Association Nguyen Ngoc Hoa said that Singapore had set up diplomatic relations with Vietnam since August 1st, 1973. “Since 1991, especially when it became an ASEAN member in 1995, the relationship between the two countries has developed strongly,” he said. “Singapore attaches great importance to its relationship with Vietnam, and Vietnam becomes one of the main commercial and investment markets of Singapore in Southeast Asia.”

The trade and investment relations between Vietnam and Singapore have continued to develop. In 2017, Singapore was Vietnam’s third largest foreign investor and the largest investor among ASEAN members in Vietnam, with USD43 billion and over 1,800 projects. In Ho Chi Minh city alone, as of June, Singapore had over 1,100 projects capitalized at USD10.5 billion.

Mr. Hoa expressed his hope that the Singaporean Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh city would increase people-to-people diplomacy, cultural, sports and tourism cooperation; and strengthen the solidarity and friendship between Ho Chi Minh city’s residents and Singaporean people.

Singaporean Consul General to Ho Chi Minh city Leow Siu Lin confirmed that the Vietnam – Singapore relationship had developed strongly in economics, culture and tourism. According to Ms Leow Siu Lin, since 1992, over 18,500 Vietnamese officers attended courses in Singapore, contributing to developing Vietnamese human resources. “Singapore also grants scholarships to senior Vietnamese officers for joining the master training program on public management,” she added./.
