The Czech-Vietnamese dictionary is projected to have six volumes. It is the confidential linguistic work of late Czech Prof. Dr. Ivo Vasiljev and engineer Nguyen Quyet Tien for the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic and those who love the languages of the two nations.
Inheriting the heritage of late Prof. Dr. Ivo Vasiljev when he died in late 2016, engineer Nguyen Quyet Tien alone wrote the fifth volume with the collaboration of Dr., translator, Vietnamese researcher Iva Klinderova.
After more than a year of collaboration, the two have completed and launched the 5th volume of the Czech-Vietnamese dictionary. The 5th volume is about 750 pages, from letter S to letter U. The dictionary is presented clearly and coherently, and is easy-to-understand for readers.
After finishing the six volumes of the Czech-Vietnamese dictionary, Mr. Nguyen Quyen Tien desires to compile three volumes of Vietnamese-Czech dictionary.
Speaking at the event, representatives from the Vietnamese Embassy and the Overseas Vietnamese Association in the Czech Republic highly appreciated the linguistic works of the two co-authors, and considered this a practical and effective contribution to increase the friendship and mutual understanding between the two nations.
They also hoped that the two co-authors would soon complete the 6th volume of the dictionary, and start to compile the Vietnamese-Czech dictionary, helping to promote the integration process of the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic as well as the development of friendly relations between the two countries.
Engineer Nguyen Quyet Tien said that right after launching the 5th volume, he will start compiling the 6th volume and is expected to complete it this year.
"I am trying to complete the 6th volume this year because 2018 is the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the former Czechoslovak Republic and wish to contribute a small part to the friendship of the two countries,” said Mr. Tien.
“Collaboration for a year has helped us understand a lot about each others’ languages and cultures. We have worked hard, shared many ideas on how the dictionary would become familiar and easy to understand for readers. In addition to academic words, we also add a lot of words close to modern life so that it is not only for students, but ordinary people can also approach them easily," said translator Iva Klinderova.
The Czech-Vietnamese dictionary was presented the second prize of Dictionary Award 2016 by the Union of Interpreters and Translators in May 2017./.
