The report points out that in the 2016-2017 academic year, Vietnam continued to rank 6th position among the leading countries in number of students studying in the US. The S-shaped country had 22,438 students, an increase of 1,035 students compared to the previous period. Some 68% of them were university students, 15.6% were postgraduates, 9% participating in optional probation programs and 7.4% studying programs granting no degree.

IIE’s report also shows that 1,078,822 international students studied in the US in the 2016-2017 academic year, an increase of 3.4% over the previous year. International students accounted for 5.35% of the total number of students in the US.

The most favorite subjects are engineering, business and management, mathematics and computer science, in which mathematics and computer science were the fastest growing fields, with an increase of 18% compared to the 2015-2016 academic year.

California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana are States that had the largest numbers of international students.

The report also shows that Vietnam is becoming a more familiar destination for US students. In the 2016-2017 academic year, the nation welcomed 1,012 US students, an increase of 9.8%.

Announced shortly after the visit of US President Donald Trump to Vietnam, these figures show the growing ties between the US and Vietnam. President Trump shared in his speech at the APEC CEO Summit 2017, "Vietnamese students are among the best students in the world. And that is very impressive.".

According to the US Embassy Hanoi, education has always been an important part of the US-Vietnam bilateral relations. The US will continue to promote opportunities for Vietnamese to study through EducationUSA and the US Centres in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city./.
