Representative of Vietnamese Embassy visits sailor rescued in Philippines

The representative of the Vietnamese Embassy in the Philippines on August 22nd visited Mr. Do Trung Hieu, a crew member of bulk carrier M/V Royal 16 who was kidnapped and held as a hostage from November 2016, newly freed by Filipino functional forces.

The crew member is being cared for and his health is recovering, his spirits are stable.

The representative of the embassy presented gifts, encouraged him and announced that the embassy was cooperating with Filipino authorities to carry out the necessary formalities to return him to his family.

Mr. Hieu thanked the Embassy and related agencies of Vietnam and the Philippines for their interest and rescue efforts.

Do Trung Hieu and five other crew members were kidnapped, along with the bulk carrier M/V Royal 16 off Sibagu island, Basilan (the Philippines) in November 2016. At the time of the robbery, there were 19 crew members on the bulk carrier.

After detaining six people, the pirates released the bulk carrier and the remaining 13 crew members, including a crew member injured by a shot in the hand. The six seafarers detained included Captain Pham Minh Tuan, Do Trung Hieu, Hoang Vo, Tran Khuong Dung, Hoang Van Hai and Hoang Trung Thong./.
