Mature custard apples have been brought from mountains in the northern border province of Lang Son to the plain for consumption.
The fruits can be harvested when the autumn comes. Some 16 communes in the border province grow custard apples, mainly in mountainous areas, making harvesting work harder.

Each fruit can weigh half a kilogram, sold at VND50,000-70,000 per kilogram. The fruit was listed among the 50 famous fruit specialties by Vietnam Record Organization in 2013.

Ms Phuong in Chi Lang town climbs the tree to harvest the fruits. Her 4-member family travels 4 kilometres each day to harvest fruits from early morning.

The fruits are carefully wrapped before transport to the plain.

Some people use bamboo frames to transport the fruits down to the foot of the mountain.

Each basket of custard apples weighs 20-30 kilograms.

Hand-made pulleys are used to transport the fruits down the mountains.

Each 1,000 metre pulley can transport 70 kilograms at maximum.

Favourable weather conditions facilitate the growth of the fruits. According to Mr. Luong Thanh Chung, Head of the Chi Lang district Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the fruits help many ethnic minority families escape poverty and lead better lives.

The fruits are then transported to different localities such as Hanoi, Hung Yen, Hai Duong and Quang Ninh.

The 2,800 hectares of the fruits in Lang Son province are mainly located in Chi Lang and Huu Lung districts. Custard apples are expected to be honoured in a festival held on August 18th in Chi Lang district.
